West Ham United fans have been reacting on Twitter to the latest development surrounding the future of Celta Vigo striker and noted January target of the Hammers, Maxi Gomez.
It has emerged in the last couple of days that should Celta be relegated from La Liga this season, the release clause for the Uruguayan international will fall to just €25million (£21.62m) from €50million (£43.25m), per Sport.
The club currently languish in 18th place in the bottom three of Spain’s top flight but are just one point off Villarreal in 17th and safety. Gomez remains one of their only hopes of survival and had it not been for his nine goals in 24 La Liga games in 2018/19 so far, they would undoubtedly be in an even worse predicament.
Although it looks like Manuel Pellegrini wouldn’t have to pay as much for Gomez in the summer as he might have in January, Irons supporters on Twitter are largely sceptical about their team’s chances of landing the 22-year-old’s signature.
Remarks such as “him signing is about as likely as us finishing seventh” and “bigger clubs will snap him up and pay him twice the amount we can” by members of the Claret & Blue Army seem accurate, as Barcelona look set to swoop for the prolific forward.
