Watford man Tommie Hoban surely relished the opportunity of a loan move to Aberdeen in the summer having been starved of minutes for the last few years at Vicarage Road but, unfortunately for the defender, it was cut short in cruel fashion.
The 25-year-old was forced to return south in February having suffered a second cruciate injury in as many seasons and is now expected to be out of action until October – disastrous news for any footballer but more so for one whose future at their club is not guaranteed beyond the summer.
The Irishman’s deal with the Hornets expires at the end of the season and he will surely have been cursing the awful timing of his injury; he is in a race against time to get fit and convince Watford – or another club – that he still has a footballing future.
Fortunately for the Walthamstow-born centre-half, Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes is a big fan and Hoban says he would be happy to return to northeast Scotland should the opportunity arise:
“I loved my time at Aberdeen and it has been one of the best dressing rooms I have been part of.
“The boys are great, the staff are brilliant and I enjoyed living up there with the family, although it was shorter than we had hoped for.
“I really enjoyed it and I would consider going back there, if it was an option.”
Javi Gracia currently has a number of centre-back options to choose from and it is looking increasingly unlikely that the Hornets will require Hoban’s services any more; a reunion with McInnes and co seems far more likely, then.

The 6 ft 2 defender was a fixture in the Watford team who secured promotion to the Premier League in 2015 – he made 27 league appearances that season – but has featured just once since, unbelievably. He will remain in the hearts of the Vicarage Road faithful for what he achieved almost four years ago, but it seems they may have seen the last of him.
