da poker: Much-maligned Southampton defender Wesley Hoedt has hinted that the club’s issues at the back are down to Mark Hughes not doing enough work on it on the training pitch.
What’s the word, then?
Well, the Dutchman, who has been heavily criticised by his own supporters on Twitter for his performances throughout his time with the club, says that when he was playing in Italy he did more defensive work on the training ground.
The 24-year-old said, via the Daily Echo: “In Italy they spend days on defending instead of moments of days.
“That’s just the difference in culture. In Italy we did two or three extra training sessions a week only for the defensive unit.”
While goals have – for the third successive season – been hard to come by for Saints in their opening eight Premier League matches this term, their 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at St Mary’s on Sunday means that they have now conceded 14 goals, with many of them appearing to be more than preventable.
Should Hughes be doing more?
While Italy is known for being a league that likes to concentrate on being defensively sound, the comments from Hoedt about the difference between his time with Lazio and now Southampton is certainly worrying.

It is clear to see that the south coast outfit need some intensive work on their backline if they are to turn their Premier League campaign around and avoid being involved in another relegation battle this term, and Hughes needs to realise that sooner rather than later.
Hoedt may not be too popular because of the errors he makes both on and off the ball, but he is also a player that could benefit from Hughes developing a defensive system the whole team can work towards to ensure they are harder to score against in the future.
