da dobrowin: Southampton defender Jan Bednarek has found first-team opportunities hard to come by under Mark Hughes so far this season, and he perhaps hasn’t done himself any favours with his displays for Poland during the international break.
The 22-year-old started both of his country’s UEFA Nations League matches against Portugal and Italy, but they both ended in defeat with a 3-2 loss against the former being followed up by a 1-0 defeat against the latter on Sunday.
Despite being a regular in the side under Hughes towards the end of last term as the south coast outfit battled against relegation, the centre-back has featured for just 80 minutes in the Premier League during the current campaign, and was hauled off at half-time after being handed his first top flight start in 2018/19 in the 3-0 reverse against Chelsea at St Mary’s last time out.
On that occasion he was probably no worse than fellow centre-halves Wesley Hoedt and Maya Yoshida and was ultimately replaced in favour of a formation change, and it remains to be seen whether he will get an opportunity in a back four moving forwards.

Despite his disappointing display against Poland, we decided to ask Saints fans whether they thought Bednarek should be given a regular chance in the starting XI under Hughes, and a majority 78% said he should be.
Given Hoedt has come under criticism from his own supporters on Twitter and their defensive record in general hasn’t been that good with the Dutchman and summer addition Jannik Vestergaard at the heart of the backline, it is perhaps not surprising.
