da pixbet: England’s chances of overcoming Italy in the Euro 2012 quarter-final have been enhanced as stalwart centre-back Giorgio Chiellini will miss the game through injury, according to The Daily Mail.
The imposing Juventus defender was struggling for fitness coming into the tournament but managed to start all three of the Azzurri’s group games.
However, after limping off early in the final Group C fixture against Republic of Ireland with a thigh injury it appears that his tournament may now be over.
After the game Italy coach Cesare Prandelli admitted: “The first test are not great.” When asked if Chiellini would take part in the tournament again, he responded: “I don’t know, we will see.”
The defender himself was unperturbed at the possibility of missing out against Roy Hodgson’s side, insisting that he will aim to make a swift return.
“On Wednesday I will have some tests to better check the injury but you can be certain that I will do everything to return as soon as possible,” Chiellini posted on Twitter.
The 27-year-old made 34 league appearances as the Bianconeri stormed to the Serie A title, remaining unbeaten for the whole campaign.
He was largely expected to add a similar level of impenetrability to the Azzurri defence throughout Euro 2012 and his absence will leave Prandelli with another difficult tactical decision ahead Sunday’s quarter-final.
Having started the first two games with three central defenders it is now likely that they will remain the four-man defence that faced Ireland, with Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci at the heart.
