da aviator aposta: The never ending David De Gea transfer saga is possibly the least exciting thing about this summer transfer window, and the world will certainly be a better place once it’s over.
da dobrowin: The stalemate between Real Madrid and Manchester United seems to have caused the merry-go-round to grind to a halt and, but, simply put, once De Gea leaves, United have the option to stick with Victor Valdes, or make a move for a replacement goalkeeper, leaving the 33-year-old in his back-up role.
Here are FIVE options that Van Gaal could pursue….
Asmir Begovic
The Bosnian stopper could be a man on the move this summer as Stoke have Jack Butland waiting to take the No.1 spot at the Britannia Stadium.
Begovic has been one of the most underrated players in the league over the last few seasons and a slight dip in form last season should not deter United from making an offer.
Begovic still has several years left at the top of his game and would be available at a significantly lower fee than they will receive for De Gea.
Hugo Lloris
For a man held in such high regard, it’s a bit puzzling that Hugo Lloris is yet to make the step up to a Champions League club. Whilst Spurs continue to dream of the top four, a move to United would represent a huge step up for the French glovesman.
His ability to sweep up behind the defence could add a bit of extra security (albeit with some risk taking) if United to play with a higher line.
Claudio Bravo
Despite having moved to Barcelona only last summer, Bravo could be available considering the excellent form of Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the cup competitions.
Bravo has had a remarkable year, winning the treble and the Copa America (following up a brilliant World Cup in 2014), and at 32 seems to be a late bloomer.
Unfortunately, Bravo’s signing is unlikely because of his age, but he could be a cut price option for Van Gaal if the younger alternatives are not attainable.
Bernd Leno
The Bayer Leverkusen man is still only 23 but has a couple of seasons at the top level under his belt and looks set up for a massive career.
Unfortunately for Leno, opportunities for his national team are few and far between with Manuel Neuer a rather large and imposing obstacle. Many consider Leno to be ready for a big move and moves don’t get much bigger than Manchester United.
Given the age profile of De Gea, Leno would be a similar type of signing and could be their first choice for as much as 15 years to come.
Jasper Cillessen
Cillessen is maybe the least well known of those linked with a move to Old Trafford, but he already has a relationship with Louis van Gaal having been his number one for the Netherlands last summer.
Cillessen is only 26 and could feasibly have another decade in elite of European football, which must appeal to any potential buyer. Ajax will surely hold out for a considerable fee if they are to sell and the Dutchman, even though he has limited experience of playing in the biggest matches.
